Meet Joanne Marshall

Joanne Marshall’s life is a living testament to the power of faith, resilience, and service. Rooted in the values nurtured by her Christian upbringing in Raleigh, North Carolina, Joanne grew up in a home where compassion wasn’t an occasional act but a daily practice. Her parents opened their doors and hearts to children bereft of homes and care.  On holidays, their house overflowed with warmth, food, and love. One of those children, an eight-year-old named Linda, became family in every sense, adopted as Joanne’s sister and woven into the fabric of their lives.

This early model of radical generosity shaped Joanne’s purpose. She’s since dedicated her life to uplifting others, quietly investing her heart and hands in causes like The Salvation Army, Dana-Farber Cancer Center, and Family Promise Homeless Shelter. Whether driving a person in need to dialysis or transforming a humble gym into a ballroom to raise critical funds, Joanne invests her whole heart and energy into helping others.  She does without judgment. For a time, she visited a young, incarcerated woman weekly to help her put the bad choice she had made behind her and move on with her life.

Her relentless energy has served her not only in her charitable work but in making her way in the world.  As an entrepreneur, she owned and operated a gourmet catering business and an interior design concern.  She managed 3 surgical offices, attending to all their accounts. All this while attending to meaningful causes and raising two sons.

Joanne’s indomitable life force has sustained her through some painful episodes: a frightening cancer diagnosis; a near-death accident when a moving vehicle collided with her body; and the inexorable sense of loss that accompanies divorce. Yet none of these trials has hardened her spirit. If anything, they’ve deepened her empathy and resolve.

At North Hill, Joanne remains a vibrant presence, beautifying spaces with flowers, inspiring neighbors through Bible study, and rallying support for the Charles River Center. Her daily acts of kindness echo the lessons of her childhood: that a life of service, offered with love, can lift not only others but also oneself. Joanne doesn’t just remember grace, she lives it.
